Liverpool suffered a defeat (6-1 to Stoke City on the final day of Barclays Premier League) that no team should ever endure especially when your diehard servant of a club man like Steve Gerrard is leaving. I am talking about even at amateur level, but truth be told Brendan Rodgers should have had the guts to cut Gerrard off from the team two years ago.
Even if he did not he could have slowed down on the praises for the Liverpool icon especially when he was not performing well, Rodgers might have thought that cutting Stevie G might have been a disaster for him and his managerial reign if he did have one after that, it takes guts and only a manager like Ferguson would have done that, to be fair not a lot of managers would have done it.
In the end Gerrard probably must be indebted to Rodgers for even sticking with him for that long, too much has been said about his "influence" on the field, but that fire from the belly has gone missing for a few seasons and...no!...Gerrard's presence was not worth a goal-maybe to the opposition, that position should have been the lynchpin to raiding attacks and interceptions and a team built around a new master in the engine room.
Rodgers however did not prove he had that with his signings for Liverpool there was no confidence in signings and you get the feeling that no big name player wanted to come to Liverpool as long as Rodgers was there and maybe just maybe Sterling is the smart one in not signing a new contract let us see who leaves the Kop and which big names come in, but will Rodgers be there?
