Welbeck Scores Against Basel In The Champions League
Manchester United had a tough match against Norwich, they had problems with a very physical Stoke City team the previous week. The Champions League match against Basel was another kettle of fish, if you saw all three matches you would have seen three very different philosophies and play from United's opponents. Stoke have a decent team that relies on their physical presence and a little bit of technical ability thrown in from players like Peter Crouch and Pennant, Stoke drew 1-1.
It is however safe to say that nine times out of ten Stoke would be beaten by United. For Sir Alex's men those three matches will probably be a valuable experience that will make them stronger and will be valuable in-put in a couple of weeks with matches against Liverpool, Romanian team Galati and Manchester City.
Against Basel of Switzerland in the Champions league they got a little complacent and too many players in that game did not have enough game time coming to that game. Welbeck though did well and is turning out to be a gem from the United academy. Phil Jones however should learn more about defensive duties and curb on his adventurous forays forward, the whole United team were guilty of this, but the defenders should take more responsibility. Basel were no push overs, both Alexander Frei and Fabian Frei being a handful.
The first half belonged to United, but in the second-half Basel seemed to come out with a better game plan and United were still going for the kill after being 2-0 up.
Basel clawed back to a 3-2 lead before Young equalized it further in the last minute of the game.Despite many observers thinking this game to be easy, Basel are not to be considered to be a push-over, how close was this match? Both Basel and United had 50 percent of the possession and both had three corners each.
The Norwich game must have been frustrating as Norwich decided to park the bus and play counter-attack from their half, but even with this they nearly managed to sneak a win against the Red Devils.
But in ties like this it is important to keep the cool and just keep doing what you are doing as United did against Norwich by attacking. Norwich kept breaking the plays, but eventually the waves of attack by United and the shuffle by Ferguson to bring on Wellbeck paid off. United won 2-0 with goals by Anderson and Welbeck.
This United team will be back with a vengeance, watch this space!
