United Win Russian Roulette

What a game! I am sure neutrals enjoyed the Champions League Final 2008 Russian Roulette edition. 1-1 all after extra time and 6-5 on penalties to United.

In the first half United dominated the play and played excellent football and score a well worked goal played on the sidelines between Schloes and Brown who crossed for Ronaldo to head in United's goal. The match however took a strange turn after Frank Lampard scored in injury time of the first half after the ball spookily deflected on two players before Lampard scored.

From the second half till extra time Chelsea were the more threatening side and even hit the woodwork twice. It had deja vu of the Bayern Munich match of 1999 when this happened to United and it was the indian sign for Chelsea. Both sides created chances and could have scored more goals, but nobody expected the drama of the Penalty shoot-out to be that dramatic. When Ronaldo missed his spot kick, it looked like it was a done deal for Chelsea to win their first Champions League trophy when Captain John Terry lined up to take his kick. Terry's non-kicking foot slipped and his shot went wide and from there it went to sudden death and Nicholas Anelka who was a transfer target for United before his switch to Chelsea from Bolton missed and that gave United the trophy.

I can't help but think that Michael Essien,Ronaldinho, Ronaldo (the Brazilian) and others might even start to wonder that they must be something in this club that can get the best out of them and maybe now potential transfer targets will look to Old Trafford as a place to play good football and at the same time reap the rewards.
