Keeping a good front

Exciting times for the English League, with Nistelrooy out of United, United are doing well without him, four straight games and all wins. Ferguson seemed to be in the right direction, but the Tottenham game did not look encouraging, according to him United have lots of forwards Saha, Rooney, Smith and Solksjaer but we are not just talking about "lots of Forwards" we are talking about world class forwards like Rooney. The frontline must be a bit more ruthless and nistelrooy was a demon in that especially in Europe.

He reportedly said, "When we started our Champions League campaign last year, with Lille, Benfica and Villarreal in our group, we thought we could take care of that," said Ferguson.

"But it didn't happen for us because we just didn't score enough goals and in four games against Lille and Villarreal, we never scored. It will be different this year, I can assure you of that.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a lot of goals for us in Europe, but I think we have started to spread goals throughout the team over the last couple of seasons.

"We have had different combinations up-front without Ruud and Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo did fantastically well against AC Milan 18 months ago. We also scored four against Arsenal at Highbury, so the goals are there alright.

"Rooney and Ronaldo getting older will help. At 20 years of age, Rooney will mature and score goals, no question about that. The boy is a fantastic player.

"And there is no question about Louis Saha's quality, we just have to hope that he stays fit. He's had an unfortunate time since he arrived here, but his goal ratio is very good. An added bonus will be if Paul Scholes stays fit, because he weighs in with his goals as well."

United need at least one more in the forward department, a world class one, but it is too late for that now well at least until January when the transfer window opens and what about a midfielder? Owen Hargraves would have been great but that does not look like its going to happen in the near future.

"Customising solutions" by turning a midfielder into a forward or a forward into a midfielder like Smith and Solksjaer will not do, the game is getting harder and quality and depth of squad need to be balanced, but than again who am I to talk this is a guy who won the treble and is the longest serving manager in the Premiership and United are still on top, but for how long and we shall see at the end of the season if I was right...watch this space.
