Germany V. Costa Rica, 9th June. score: 4-2
Well The World Cup kicked off and it was a blast. Though the match was exiciting it was not a quality match. World Cup standard it was not (yes I sound like Yoda but we need somebody to bring some wisdom here). The Germans were attacking but they pushed up so far in the field that the defence was left in a vulnerable state.
The Costa Ricans were not a World Cup team, perhaps FIFA should think about cutting down the places in the CONCACAF region. Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimaraes has built his reputation on tactical know-how but that is of course not enough in the World Cup, you still need talent. The Costa Ricans forgot how to tackle and defend and the only bright spot for them was Paulo Wanchope he proved akward for the Germans...and the goals by Philip Lamm and Torsten Frings, now we know they are not Brazilians and this time I must say the ball is definitely influencing the match.
For every tournament Adidas makes a new ball and players always complain, but this time I think they have a reason too (but the Germans and a few other teams will not be complaining for obvious reasons). But if you saw those two German players mentioned above and how they scored their goals you will see that in this World Cup players are going to have a great and horrid time, horrid especially for goalkeepers.
German coach Klinsmann was indeed smart in giving common sense instructions to the German players to shoot on site to score and it worked like a charm. The Costa Ricans did not do this and a lot of other things, it was like they were just glad to be there. Guimaraes is reported to retire after this World Cup and will concentrate on writing football novels, well I think he better do that fast and pen one success story for Costa Rica as for the Germans yes victory is sweet but two (let in) goals against a a team that is a underweight does not look good, the Germans have to buck up with or without Michael Ballack.
